We not only work with carers to help overcome any issues with their caring role but we also support local employers to help them recognise and support carers within their workforce. This ensures that organisations and line managers are familiar with legislation in relation to carers and are aware of other simple methods of supporting carers in the workplace.
A working carer is ….
Someone who works full or part-time, and provides unpaid care to someone who couldn’t cope without their support
Why not become a ‘Carer Friendly Employer’?
As an employer in Gateshead it is estimated that almost 15% of your employees will have significant caring responsibilities in addition to paid employment. 1 in 6 carers give up work or cut back on hours to care. This is generating an unwelcome financial impact on businesses faced with losing skilled employees in whom they have already made a considerable investment.
We want to work with employers across Gateshead to identify ‘hidden carers’ within their work force who may not be receiving support. We can support employers to ensure that their policies and procedures are carer-friendly and help their staff access a range of benefits by simply signing up to our Carer-Friendly Employer Charter…. Just look at what you can receive, and best of all it’s free!

Free App4Care for Working Carers
As part of our new Working Carers project, we are offering Working Carers the chance to access our new App pilot scheme – App4Care – free of charge.
App4Care provides a suite of seven easy to use functions, which help carers at work, living away or on holiday stay connected with those they care for.
App4Care is available for Apple and Android phones, and offers support to both the carer and the cared for. There are seven main applications, which synced automatically on the both the carer and the cared-for phones.
Task list manager
Carers can create, edit and schedule important tasks and reminders for a cared-for person to see and act upon. This is useful for remembering medication, shopping, appointments and leisure activities
Carers have the reassurance of knowing that a cared-for person is recording simple wellbeing data each day, collating over time into an important record of that person’s physical and emotional wellbeing.
A panic alarm is available on screens throughout the cared-for app. With an audible alarm, direct calling and auto-generated alerts, the cared-for person is easily able to alert the carer if there is a problem, day or night.
Should the cared-for person’s app sense a trip or a fall, an audible alarm will sound. After 20 seconds the carer will receive an alert message clarifying whether the cared-for has cancelled the alarm as ‘I’m OK’ or that additional assistance may be required.
GPS Tracker and Alert
Carers often worry that the people they look after will get confused and stray further than they should. Using GPS tracker, carers can view the cared-for person’s whereabouts at any time. Should the cared-for person move outside pre-programmed safe zones, the carer will receive an alert prompting them to check the latest location and provide direct assistance if required.
How to get your app4care?
To receive an app you need to be a Working carer, and have have a smartphone (both you and your cared-for).
To get a free app please contact Helen Hughes Tel: 0191 4900121 or email@example.com
The app is available for Android, and iPhones, however iPhones need to IOS 8 or later.
